Poetry and Portraits: Saluting our Second World War Generation
POETRY AND PORTRAITS follows on from A Debt of Gratitude to The Last Heroes and The Last Stand – Memories of War, and is the 3rd book from Gary Bridson-Daley, continuing his work to preserve the vitally important personal histories of our brave Servicemen and Women, and is Forwarded by D-Day Veteran Bernard Morgan LDH - Legion d'Honneur.
‘Poetry and Portraits’ is set out in two main chapters, and as the title suggests the first is with Poetry, written by the Author over the years regarding Remembrance, Veterans and their sacrifices, Conflict and Peace. The second chapter are Portraits with the background information of 60 WW2 Military & Civilian Veterans, the vast majority of whom Gary personally interviewed from 2014 until the release of this book, and most are great new never seen before content. It is also collated to reflect and thank all whose stories he has featured over the years and to convey the diversity of those involved in his ‘Debt of Gratitude Project, which has included World War Two veterans from England, Ireland, Scotland, Wales, Poland, Holland, Germany, Jamaica, India, Pakistan, Nepal, Canada and the U.S.A, and contains the narratives of Veterans from Royal and Merchant Navies, Army, Air Force, Special Forces, Intelligence & Civilian backgrounds and includes tribute pages to Sir Winston Churchill, Lieutenant Colonel ‘Paddy’ Mayne and Captain Frederic ‘Johnnie’ Walker.
Also contained within its pages are Veterans from most of the main events of the Second World War, and as such reflects and covers most of the big anniversaries related to them as and when they occur. This 3rd book is also laid out in a more illustrated format in order to again give more varied content between each of the books and continue to be interesting and stimulating for the reader. All profiles have descriptive text regarding their personal World War Two and in a number of cases post-war service history such as those in The Berlin Airlift, Korea, Suez Canal Crisis, Malayan and Aden Emergencies, National Service, Palestine, Kenya, Christmas Island A-Bomb tests, Northern Ireland and the Cold War, this also acts as a big bridge for his work moving forward. Gary sincerely hopes that those who read it will enjoy the book as much as he enjoyed compiling it.
Poetry and Portraits was intentionally uploaded and essentially created in the public domain on the 26th March 2025, this is the birthday of his Mum Sylvia June Bridson, who his books are all jointly dedicated to, and in her memory has a memorial page with a beautiful portrait included, both that page and the hopeful digital date linking of this book are all to honour and forever remember her. In addition to this the Author is very happy and proud to also have his father Leslie Daley in this new book as well, this he feels on a personal level further enhances the content, and supplements the stories of the great veterans he has been blessed to have in there already.
To conclude, throughout his Debt of Gratitude Project the motivation of the author resolutely remains, as expressed in his previous works, and through his mantra, to pay tribute to and write books that are:
