The "Thin Red Line", a phrase which is often used to denote a thinly spread defending infantry is in fact a misquote. The original phrase was invented by a British Times journalist reporting back from the Crimean War in 1854. William Russell, wrote in his copy that the Russian cavalry were prevented from taking Balaclava by "a thin red streak topped with a line of steel". The 'thin red streak' in this instance were the Scottish 93rd Highlanders who, at that time, still wore the red uniforms of the British Army.
